How to Rename a Channel in Slack

You can rename a channel in Slack. There’s no limit on how long you have after creation to rename it, either, nor are there restrictions on the channels that can be renamed — you can even rename the default #General channel.

How to Rename a Channel in Slack

You will need to be an administrator of the channel you want to rename. If you aren’t, you will need to have someone with the required permissions grant them to you as well or follow the steps below to rename a channel in Slack.

  1. Right-click on the channel you want to rename in the Channels sidebar.
  2. Select Settings from the menu that appears, followed by Channel Name.
  3. Enter the new channel name, then click Save Changes.

Channel names must be lowercase, without spaces or periods, and can’t exceed 80 characters. You’re also limited when it comes to punctuation that can be used, though dashes are permitted, so consider using these for multi-word channel names.
