How Many Jobs are Available in Consumer Services?

There’s no real limit to the number of jobs are available in the consumer services sector, which focuses on services that are sold to individuals rather than to businesses. This industry isn’t limited to just the United States, and is essential to the health of the global economy. Regardless of where you’re based, there are consumer services jobs — even the most undeveloped of countries need healthcare services, for instance.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that all careers in the consumer services industry are created equal; some pay a lot more than others, and often varies depending on location. Nurses are a prime example. Registered Nurses in California have an average salary of $124,000 a year, a staggering 52% less than the $60,540 average in South Dakota, in line with local cost of living rates, overall service demand, and other economic factors.

You can also create your own opportunities, as contractors can provide consumer services.

What Consumer Service Jobs are there?

The consumer services industry — which makes up around 70% of the GDP in the United States — is broad, with everything from customer service and interior design to legal professionals representing individuals and even landscapers falling under the umbrella. Doctors and nurses, salespeople in department stores, chefs and servers in restaurants, and school teachers are also examples of popular consumer service jobs.

The amount of education and experience needed for these roles varies, ranging from entry-level positions like a server in a local restaurant or working as customer service for an online brand to professional careers that require a degree, like practicing as a barrister or an attorney, or teaching math at a high-school, as well as internships and self-taught opportunities in the construction and landscaping industries, for example.
