Does Notion Have Two-Factor Authentication?
If there’s one area Notion needs to improve it’s security. We’ve already revealed that in-house administrators have access to user data, but what’s stopping external snoopers from having a look around your Workspace? Aside from the obvious secure password, one would assume two-factor authentication would be the next line of defense. But does Notion have two-factor authentication?
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Before we dive into whether Notion has two-factor authentication, we should probably touch on what it is. In a nutshell, two-factor authentication – also known as two-step verification and 2FA – is an extra layer of protection beyond a traditional username and password. This can take form of a unique authentication code sent to, or generated on, the user’s smartphone or tablet.
Does Notion Have Two-Factor Authentication?
Sadly, Notion doesn’t support two-factor authentication to boot in the sense that there’s no option to turn it on within the service itself. That’s not to mean some level of two-factor can’t be configured, though. Choose to sign up for Notion with your Google Account and you can take advantage of Google’s own two-factor authentication feature – Google Auth – to keep your Notion account safe.
The way this works is simple. Instead of signing in to Notion using an email address and password, you’ll do so using your Google Account. This will be protected by Google’s two-factor authentication feature, meaning intruders won’t be able to access your Notion account without first breaking into your Google one. It’s not the most convenient approach for existing users, but it’ll do the trick.
Should You Use Two-Factor Authentication?
Yes, you should absolutely use two-factor authentication with Notion. Even though it’s not a native feature, one could argue it’s actually more secure through Google. If you’re entrusting Notion with your data, why wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to keep it out of harm’s way – and the first step to doing this is by building up the defense for the account you use to sign in to the service.
What Else Can You Do To Protect Your Account?
Outside of setting up two-factor authentication, the main thing you can do to protect your Notion account is to configure it using a new Google Account. The email address should be a unique alphanumeric mix and should not to be used with any service other than Notion. This minimizes the risk of the login address being exposed in the event of a different linked service encounters a data breach.
